The City of Mount Rainier purchased the vacant 'Superior' car dealership on Rhode Island Ave. to become the new headquarters for their police department. Schick Goldstein Architects was awarded the project, which included adding to and renovating this 'historic' structure. The existing masonry facade was maintained, including the 'Superior' relief in the masonry and the crenelations at the roof line. By removing the existing garage doors and carving into the front street wall, the front facade became more inviting and created a covered main entrance way. A new 100 ft long clear story daylight monitor built along the spine of the existing roof allows natural light into the interior corridor and all work areas.

 

The project was seeking LEED GOLD. The majority of the existing steel structure, masonry walls, and wood floors remain. A vertical piped geothermal heat pump system was installed in the rear parking area along with an Energy Recovery Ventilation system. SIP Panels were installed onto the existing roof framing.  Interior finishes included wood panels made with sun flower seeds, cellulose insulation and recycled windshield glass floor tiles.
